The Theory of Living
Rather than “Living” one's life, many are nowadays trying to “Survive”, it. In other words, people nowadays are striving - to achieve their dreams, to make others happy and to not disappoint those who are counting on them. Give me a hallelujah if this sounds just about right.
I believe this world really has become far more complex now than it ever was before. Most people have learned to define their lives in the 140 characters of a tweet or a 6-second status on snapchat. Human emotions are now replaced by words like LOL, ROFL, AWW and so on. We have begun to forget how it is to “Live” like a real human. Looking around, we see young people sacrificing their youth in pursuit of material happiness, in a race to build their own kingdom, forgetting to “live” each moment of their life as it passes by. Ages later we see them living the life they had dreamed in their youth but now with one foot in the coffin.
Before proceeding kindly read the following story…
A Group of friends, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. The conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to the coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:
“If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases, it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups… And then began envying each other’s cups. Then the professor said,
“Now consider this: Life is the COFFEE; the jobs, money and position in the society are the CUPS. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of Life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us”.
God brews the coffee, not the cups.
Note that, The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
Indeed we have to be a survivor when struggles try to knock us down, but it does not mean to forget to “live” the life that meant to be lived. Be grateful for the things that we have now. Remember that we live only once, so make sure that you will not regret it at the end. Stop trying to get approval from the people around you. Even if you do things well, there will be a group of people out there who still find faults in it. So don’t try to be someone else.
Be who you are.
Be grateful and live every moment.
